Coaches

coach first pageIn 1978, the Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Association, in conjunction with the government, undertook coaching sessions at Victoria Park, the only public lawn bowls facility in Hong Kong at that time. In fact, the HKLBA is the first National Sports Association in Hong Kong to offer regular and officially recognized coaching courses for beginners. These coaching courses were later expanded to other public lawn bowling facilities and so far, thousands of courses have been held with tens of thousand participants involved.

Providing their services to all the training courses organized by the HKLBA and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the 83 coaches in Hong Kong carry the heavy responsibility of budding new players for the sport of lawn bowls.

All the coaches are under the governance of the Coaching Committee, whose members handle all matters pertaining to coaches.

Anyone who wants to be a coach is required to attend a Hong Kong Bowls Coach Training Course, which is aimed at providing all applicants with the knowledge and skills required to qualify as a coach.  They then need to be successful in a skill test and an oral examination, before moving on to attend and pass the Sports General Theory Course organized by the Hong Kong Coaching Committee.  After that they are required to pass a practical session before being appointed as an accredited coach.

The role of the Coach can be a very satisfying one.  They are not only involved in helping bowlers to become competitive, they need to be responsible for the ongoing bowling education of the people they teach, and the return for doing so can just be out of one’s imagination.
